I once saw a little article tacked to the wall in my Journalism class that told me an aspiring reporter ought to have a professional-style news blog to show prospective employers.
So, this is that.
I've only been involved in the journalism for about a year, working as a staff writer for Cuesta College's student paper. Next semester, if I play my cards right, I'll be the editor.
The way I see it, I could approach that position in one of two ways:
1- I could treat it like just another class and not really a big deal, considering that anyone who stuck around for three semesters would eventually become the editor for this little charity paper that hardly anyone reads, or
2- I could proceed with exaggerated self importance and a nigh holy order to bring the students of Cuesta the truth.
I think I'm gonna go No. 2. It's a little cheesy, but we've got 10 thousand students plus teachers who spend a substantial amount of time on that campus. They deserve a quality source of information and reporters that will call the administration on any poor decisions/ lies. Why not get all inspired and march around demanding truth? It'll be much more fun if I play the part right.
And another thing - Higher education is getting shafted something fierce these days. I kinda want to get involved in fixing that. I at least want to stimulate and steer the conversation toward making the drastic changes that might be necessary.
